This was a sweet conversion - take a tired old race horse, 27 years old, and turn her into a young stallion again! Well, maybe a mature, stately, proud, nobel Day-Sailer.
Butch Roth, Applewood Boatworks in Gloucester, has been sailing in the Etchells fleet for a couple of decades, and knows these boats and the people who sail them very well. Wise Marine was honored to partner with Applewood Boatworks to assist in making this conversion happen.
The idea was to make the boat more fun to spend some time in, easy to sail, communing with the ocean, instead of just competing against the fleet. We widened the cockpit by 6 inches, lowered the sole four inches, made the jib extremely easy to manage, put some decent seats in her, put all the control lines within easy reach, and, for Frosting On The Cake, added bunch of oiled and varnished teak...
Did I mention that Butch is a genius for setting up boats for sailing easy, and for sailing fast. He has set up boats for some name-brand sailors who credit him for helping them get silver. That talent isn't wasted on this kind of project. Just ask the fellow who sails this boat today - he is excited to have a "new" Etchells to satisfy his sailing ambitions today!
She is a dream to sail, and not going to beat you up - just beat up to windward in that crazy-wonderful way these boats do...
